EBISD implements School Guardian Program

February 4, 2020

EBISD Students and Parents,

Throughout The United States, schools and other public places are being forced to prepare for the unthinkable – the potential of a mass shooting. Tragedies of this nature are becoming too common in our society and “Gun-Free School Zones” have become easy targets. Sadly, no plan guarantees 100% safety, but rest assured EBISD continues to be vigilant and take measures to ensure our students are as safe and protected as possible. Over the past year, the East Bernard ISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent have consulted legal counsel, attended multiple best practice seminars, spoken with other Guardian districts, consulted local law enforcement, and held a public safety forum to gain insight on the school guardian program. After careful consideration, the Board has chosen to take action by changing local policy CKC and implementing a school guardian program. School guardians will have the right to carry a concealed handgun on school grounds.

The Guardians will be staff members who have passed each of the following requirements:
  • Hand-selected staff members approved by the school board
  • Must have a valid License to Carry (LTC)
  • Must pass a psychological exam
  • Must qualify annually with law enforcement specific to the handgun they will carry
  • Must meet additional mandatory practice and training requirements
  • Other confidential requirements

No students, parents, visitors, etc. are allowed to carry. Only those Guardians who have met all requirements are allowed to carry. Please continue to be aware that any gun rumored to be on campus or seen on campus should be reported immediately. In order to protect Guardians from being targeted by an intruder, their names are confidential and will not be released.

East Bernard ISD will continue to do everything we can to ensure that our children are educated in an environment that is safe, healthy, and supportive.

Sincerely,

Courtney Hudgins
Superintendent
