On Friday, May 4th, four East Bernard FFA Members competed in the statewide invitational Metal Fabrication and Welding Contest at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. The team consisted of Jared Fuechec, Colton Hundl, Joseph Vacek, and Jonah Korenek. As a team they placed 4th out of 36 teams and Vacek was the 6th high placing individual at the contest.
The contest consists of four parts: (1) 100 question test on welding theory and welding math problems, (2) a blueprint/layout section where students must interpret a paragraph describing a project to be cut. Students must then measure and mark the project on a piece of metal, (3) students must mark and then cut a piece of metal using a oxy-fuel cutting torch, and (4) students had to stick weld some plate in the 1G, 2G, and 2F welding positions using three different electrodes.
